Programme specification

Programme Aims:
At the end of the programme students should meet the requirements as laid down by the School to fulfil the standards set by the GMC Outcomes for Graduates 2018

Distinctiveness of the programme:

- Spiral integrated curriculum.
- Patient safety at the heart, recurring theme throughout.
- New IDEALs course (Innovation, Development, Enterprise, Leadership, Safety), is a novel course that underpins the whole MBChB, recognising the challenges and requirements of modern postgraduate practice with a strong emphasis on professionalism and development.
- One of only a few schools to offer practical sessions.
- Clinical integration of all aspects of curriculum with academic clinicians involved from year 1 onwards.

The 2010 Research Evaluation & Special Studies (RESS) Strand is updating to the ENQUIRE Strand, starting with year 1 in 2022-2023. This curriculum provides students with a) research, audit and service evaluation skills to ask and answer questions about healthcare, and evaluate different types of evidence informing and innovating clinical practice, and b) practical experience to apply this knowledge to a question of interest to them via supported self-selected projects (SSP). Year 1-3 provides the foundation to their critical thinking and enquiry methods: year 1 focuses on individually generated data, year 2 routinely collected population data, year 3 date from multiple outcomes; students carry out a significant project in an area of relevance to their clinical and career development in year 4-5.

Introduction of IDEALS.
- New course that replaces Personal Development, focusing much more on development of ‘softer skills’ required for successful transition through the curriculum and beyond.
- Meshes self and structure.
- Key role in determining and developing notions of self regulation, professionalism, engagement with the course.

Introduction of CARES - Strengthening our existing programme and teaching models - links with community and NHS partners
