The Childhood Studies programme will enable you to understand key concepts of childhood and youth through a multidisciplinary approach. The programme explores different cultural constructions of childhood and youth and the impact on lived realities in diverse and differing contexts. You will have an opportunity to develop your understanding and analysis through four key interconnected programme strands, allowing you to map your learning pathway through each level of study: Research; Child Development; Children’s Rights, Social Justice and Policy; and Sociology of Childhood. Optional and discovery modules allow you to broaden your understanding and develop individual interests. Modules across the programme allow you to engage with ethical issues and responsibilities related to the Childhood Studies Discipline. Opportunities to engage with diverse perspectives across a range of contexts are emphasised. The skills and attributes developed for employment in a range of careers involving children are made clear across the programme and modules.
The course offers rigorous and multidisciplinary academic study through lectures, seminars, workshops and personal supervision. You will have access to a range of learning resources and pedagogical approaches, including media and digital technologies. During your three years of undergraduate study, you will be required to engage actively in reflexive personal study and interactively with your tutors and fellow students in debate, analysis and critique. The course provides a gradual and progressive learning experience through its carefully staged and sequenced design. Key basic understanding is established and gradually increased to allow you to develop more complex and sophisticated analysis. Through the systematic interactive elements of study, and emphasis on active engagement in your own learning the course responds to the needs and interests of learners with different educational, social and cultural backgrounds.
