Module summary

This module will enable you to fundamentally understand the key terms, technologies and global supply chain behind the production of textile materials. You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and laboratory demonstrations. This will encompass the full manufacturing chain (fibres, yarns, fabrics, coloration, finishing, apparel manufacturing), and the complex global geographical spread and emerging trends. You’ll also identify the key innovation challenges and the desired interventions to develop a sustainable and circular textile ecosystem.

Objectives

This module has two aims:
- to provide students with a cohesive understanding of the manufacturing processes and business interactions in the manufacturing of textile products; and
- to develop academic success-enabling skills and attitudes early on for students on their academic journey.
The objectives of the module are to:
1) provide an overview of the salient processes necessary to make textile products.
2) introduce key terminology and concepts related to textile manufacturing processes, business models and supply networks.
3) support students developing a coherent and cohesive understanding of the textile product manufacturing industry.
4) to promote and develop skills and attitudes that are linked to academic success.
To achieve the objectives, varied learning activities are used. Notably, a series of seminars guide support the students towards achieving objectives 1, 3 and 4. To support/achieve objectives 1 and 2, students will learn key principles informed by a series of lectures and laboratory demonstrations.
A multi-faceted piece of assessment and regular guidance and feedback on the students’ progress with completing the assessment support objective 4.

2. Identify different textiles materials and relate them to their appropriate manufacturing processes

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Feedback is provided to the students on two levels: on their learning and on their progress with the assessment task. Feedback on their learning takes place in the seminars as topics are discussed with active student engagement. It also takes place as part of the 3 coursework feedback sessions scheduled throughout the semester.
Feedback on progress with assessment task, which takes place at the 3 coursework feedback sessions, is designed to promote students engaging with their assessment task regularly throughout the progress of the semester, and therefore promote students’ success through supporting good study skills.

The module operates a Pass/Fail only system to encourage a level of risk taking. The students are supported to succeed with the single assessment point by regular formative submissions (and feedback sessions) that build up to the final submission.
