Objectives

Students will understand how to;
- stratify individuals into risk categories in health screening;
- describe and utilize the general principles of exercise testing and prescription;
- interpret the results of health related physical fitness testing and clinical exercise testing;
- critically evaluate the utility and diagnostic value of clinical exercise testing;
- correctly modify exercise prescription for clinical and special populations (for example cardiovascular disease, lung disease, diabetes, cancer, and the elderly);
- Identify underlying pathophysiology for different clinical conditions.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the module students will be able to:
- Explain the principles of patient risk stratification;
- Analyse and interpret data from an exercise test;
- Construct an exercise prescription;
- Differentiate prescriptions for clinical and special populations;-
- Discuss underlying pathophysiology of different clinical diseases.

The syllabus includes:
- Pre-exercise health evaluation and risk stratification;
- Clinical exercise testing;
- General principles of exercise prescription;
- Prescription modifications for clinical and special populations;
- Pathophysiology of clinical conditions.

Private study

Details of private study and independent learning:

Students will be expected to study towards a seminar and coursework case study. This study will be via independent reading and literature searching, and preparation for live workshop sessions.

This will be undertaken by summative assessments as in course work and attendance records.
