Pre-requisite qualifications

A basic understanding of mathematics equivalent to GCSE maths grades 7-9 is expected. Basic understanding of human anatomy and biology equivalent to BTEC or higher in biology, PE or sports science is also expected.

Module summary

This module introduces a key discipline in Sport and Exercise Sciences - Biomechanics. Biomechanics investigates the generation of movement and the associated forces using applied physical laws. It focuses of the fundamental theories to prepare students for later more advanced and applied material. It will also cover principles of experimental measurements and testing.

Objectives

Learners will develop a basic understanding of the core concepts of Biomechanics including:
- Biomechanics in relation to the study of movement using applied physical laws
- The generation of movement through the application of forces to biological and non-biological structures

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1: Describe human motion and force generation using fundamental biomechanical terms.
2: Interpret how these physical processes can be explained and tested through biomechanical theory and experimentation.
3: Identify the application of biomechanics to sport, exercise and clinical fields.
