This is an integrated Spanish language and language skills module, designed to enhance and consolidate inherited structures, in a variety of contexts. Alongside the enhancement of the four basic language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) students will gain competence in the following transferable skills: - the ability to appreciate and use nuanced language at an advanced level; - the ability to appreciate and use at an advanced level tone, register, structure and style in oral and written communication; - the ability to interact and negotiate orally in complex situations. Students wishing to take this module should have passed SPPO2160 in Level 2.
The objective of the module is to put into practice and consolidate grammatical structures and vocabulary previously acquired in written and spoken Spanish through training in skills such as formulation of arguments, presentation of cases, debates, etc.
Upon completion of this module students will be able to express themselves fluently and accurately in both Spanish and English.
Upon completion of this module students will be able to express themselves fluently and accurately in both Spanish and English. They will have enhanced knowledge of Spanish grammar and syntax, covering part of the contents of C1 CEFR, and understanding of nuanced language, tone and idiomatic expressions in Spanish at an advanced level.
On successful completion of this module students will:
- understand the main ideas of complex Spanish texts on both concrete and abstract topics;
- understand extended speech and lectures in Spanish, and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar;
- understand Spanish television programmes and films without too much effort;
- be able to take an active part in discussion in Spanish in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining their views;
- be able to interact in Spanish with a degree of fluency and spontaneity, negotiating orally in complex situations;
- be able to produce clear, detailed texts in Spanish, and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
The students will study a range of contemporary topics through the medium of contemporary material taken from journalistic and other sources, and cover advanced points of grammar.
- Written exercises will cover areas such as translation, resumes, essays and the like.
- In the oral component of the module, students will be required to carry out task work based on the written materials already supplied.
