Module summary

The module aims to further enhance your linguistic skills, bringing you to a Threshold or Intermediate (A-Level) standard. By the end of the module, you will be able to comprehend television and radio programmes in Catalan and grasp the main ideas of complex texts that address both concrete and abstract topics, including technical texts within specialised professional fields. In addition, you will develop the ability to interact effectively with native speakers, communicating your ideas with a degree of fluency and spontaneity while expressing your viewpoints clearly. Finally, you will be taught to write on a wide range of subjects, without committing many basic grammatical errors. Simultaneously, the course will expand your understanding of Catalan history and culture, building on the knowledge acquired in Catalan Language and Culture I. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.

Objectives

On the language front, this module aims to enhance and consolidate structures learnt in Level 1 Catalan and the communicative autonomy and strategies. The students will gain competence in language and social interaction in the following areas (described in Level B1 of the Common European Framework for Languages):

- Be able to deal with the majority of language situations that can occur when travelling or living in a country where Catalan is spoken.
- Produce simple and coherent discourse about topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
- Describe events and experiences, dreams and ambitions and give brief reasons and explanations for opinions and projects.

Students will practise the four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in a variety of contexts. On completing the module they should be able to express yourselves in Catalan with a significant degree of fluency. At the same time, the module aims to build on the knowledge of Catalan culture acquired in Catalan Language and Culture I.
