Module summary

This module aims to consolidate and advance Portuguese language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) to a B1+ level of the CEFR, building on knowledge from SPPO1081 and SPPO1083. Students will enhance their proficiency through authentic language use and critical language awareness, gaining a deeper understanding of Portuguese grammar, register, and culture. Through exposure to authentic materials and culturally relevant topics, students will be exposed to different uses of language and the resulting effects on register and style. The module fosters confidence and independence in real-world communication. Designed for degree students and those preparing for a year abroad, this intensive module is ideal for those seeking to develop their Portuguese skills. Students preferring a less intensive approach should consider LANG modules.

Objectives

The module aims to consolidate and extend students’ existing language skills through a combination of grammar instruction rooted in authentic language use, exposure to diverse text types, and extensive opportunities for communicative practice. The module places particular emphasis on the development of oral interaction in a variety of communicative contexts and encourages students to reflect on their own use of language as well as their language learning strategies. Students should achieve the level B1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) in Portuguese, acquiring a level of lexical, grammatical and functional competence which will allow them to communicate in a wide range of areas using adequate registers both in writing and orally during their Year Abroad.

Learning outcomes

1- Analyse texts of some complexity written in Portuguese, about cultural and societal issues from different perspectives
2- Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity in Portuguese taking an active part in the discussion of social and cultural topics and adapting register
