Objectives

- To consolidate and expand the student's knowledge and use of the Spanish language in both written and oral forms.
- To prepare the student for practical applications of the language (in study or work placement) during the year or term abroad.
- To acquaint the student with a range of linguistic styles and registers (e.g. literary, colloquial, journalistic).
- To give the student some guidance in producing both descriptive and reasoned writing in Spanish.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module students will be able to express themselves fluently and accurately in both Spanish and English. They will have enhanced knowledge of Spanish grammar and syntax, covering part of the contents of C1 CEFR, and understanding of nuanced language, tone and idiomatic expressions in Spanish at an advanced level.

On successful completion of this module students will:

- understand the main ideas of complex Spanish texts on both concrete and abstract topics;
- understand extended speech and lectures in Spanish, and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar;
- understand Spanish television programmes and films without too much effort;
- be able to take an active part in discussion in Spanish in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining their views;
- be able to interact in Spanish with a degree of fluency and spontaneity, negotiating orally in complex situations;
- be able to produce clear, detailed texts in Spanish, and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
- be prepared to undertake a year or term abroad with a study or work placement in a Spanish-speaking country.

Syllabus

- The module will involve a range of activities, from the fundamentals of essay writing from and into Spanish to project work and oral and written presentations.
- Oral sessions include language laboratory work as well as both free and structured discussions in Spanish.
- Students will work individually and in groups.
