This module is approved as a discovery module
In this module students will consolidate and advance their Spanish language proficiency across all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) to a B2+ level of the CEFR, enabling them to communicate effectively and confidently in a variety of real-world contexts. By immersing students in authentic language use and fostering critical language awareness, the module seeks to develop a deeper understanding of the Spanish language. Through exposure to authentic materials and culturally relevant topics, students will expand their vocabulary and gain insights into Spanish-speaking cultures. Ultimately, the module seeks to foster students’ confidence and independence as Spanish language learners. Students wishing to take this module should have passed SPPO1010 in Level 1, or have the equivalent level of Spanish (B2). This module is designed for students who study Spanish as part of their degree and students who wish to develop their Spanish skills intensively (for example in preparation for a year abroad in a Spanish-speaking country). Students wishing to take a less intensive approach to learning Spanish are advised to consider LANG modules. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
The module aims to consolidate and extend students’ existing language skills through a combination of grammar instruction rooted in authentic language use, exposure to diverse text types, and extensive opportunities for communicative practice. The module places particular emphasis on the development of oral interaction in a variety of communicative contexts and encourages students to reflect on their own use of language as well as their language learning strategies. Students should achieve the level B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) in Spanish, acquiring a level of lexical, grammatical and functional competence which will allow them to communicate in a wide range of subjects both in writing and orally in their Year Abroad.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1- Understand oral and written texts in Spanish following complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar.
2- Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with proficient speakers of Spanish possible.
3- Produce clear, detailed texts in Spanish on a variety of subjects related to their field of interest.
4- Describe and evaluate the viewpoints and practices of their own and other social groups.
5- Use different media effectively to communicate information and knowledge in Spanish
