This module will help you to progress from A1 to A2 according to the CEFR scale in the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) in Portuguese. On the completion of this module you will be able to understand simple instructions in Portuguese and respond appropriately in everyday situations. You will develop awareness of the Portuguese culture and linguistic diversity. This module is designed for students studying Portuguese as part of their degree.
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- build on prior basic knowledge of Portuguese
- develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary and expressions and a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for that level
- train students to apply these skills in basic written and spoken communication
- develop students’ interest in the cultures where Portuguese is spoken
- develop students’ awareness of Portuguese linguistic diversity
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Understand written language on familiar topics and everyday needs,
2. Participate in short conversations and respond appropriately in predictable contexts, using basic grammar and vocabulary.
3. Write short, structured texts on familiar topics using appropriate language conventions, using basic grammar and vocabulary.
4. Recognise cultural norms and practices relevant to the target language.
5. Use context clues to understand unfamiliar language
6. Use appropriate digital and reference resources to support self-directed learning.

Regular progress will be monitored through students’ engagement with formative activities set on Minerva or through a textbook ahead of each class. Students will receive formative feedback throughout the module to consolidate their learning, prepare for assessments, and encourage autonomous language development.
