The aim of this intensive and rewarding module is to take students from total beginners to about an A1 level of the CEFR, giving them the ability to produce, read, understand and translate spoken and written Portuguese in a variety of everyday contexts. The module is taught via four weekly language classes including two grammar/writing skills-based classes, using a booklet especially devised by our language tutors, and two oral/ vocabulary classes with a native speaker of Portuguese. All students with an A-Level pass or equivalent in a foreign language are eligible to apply for this popular module, and students with interests in continental and Brazilian Portuguese are equally welcome. This is a 20 credit module run in Semester 1 and should be taken together with SPPO1081– Students with prior knowledge of Portuguese should consider SPPO1083: Intermediate Portuguese or SPPO1084 Intermediate Portuguese (semester 1 only) Those who do well in both SPPO1080 and SPPO1081 can, depending on their programme, apply to change to Joint Honours Portuguese in Level 2. This module aims to equip students with a basic grounding in Portuguese grammar and an ability to produce, read, understand and translate spoken and written Portuguese in a variety of everyday contexts. Basic grammatical structures will be covered, and vocabulary will be built up in key areas of everyday communication.

2. The accurate use of Portuguese in simple written and spoken contexts
3. The ability to organise and present ideas within the framework of a structured and reasonable argument
4. Awareness of modern Portuguese speaking cultures;
5. Ability to critically reflect on their own work and that of others.

4. The ability to assimilate and implement appropriate style conventions in written work, including bibliography and footnotes/endnotes.
This module, intended for ab initio students of Portuguese, will:
a) cover the basic rules of Portuguese language, including the use of nouns, adjectives, pronouns and verbs in the most commonly used tenses
b) introduce students to reading an elementary text in Portuguese
c) give practice in Portuguese conversation in everyday situations
d) give practice in the comprehension of elementary spoken Portuguese.

The resit for any written component of this module will take the form of a 1 hour exam. The resit for any oral component will comprise a 10 minute oral exam
