The aim of this module is to familiarise students with the key issues relating to the history and cultural production of Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa. This module will be appropriate for students with an interest in the history, culture and society of the Portuguese-speaking world. No knowledge of Portuguese language is required as this module is taught in English.
The objectives of this module are: to provide students with an overview of the history of Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa; to provide students with knowledge of the key cultural producers from Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa; to encourage students to reflect on ideas such as identity and culture in a historical and intercultural context; to develop students' skills to analyse and discuss a wide range of primary and secondary sources; to develop students' ability to craft their own arguments and use evidence to support them.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the history and key cultural products of Brazil, Portugal and Portuguese-speaking Africa
2. Show an awareness of the interplay between politics and culture
3. Engage critically with secondary literature and its use in preparation for written work
4. Demonstrate the ability to progress beyond the narrative/chronological to a more analytical and evaluative approach
5. Organise and present ideas within the framework of a structured and reasonable argument.

Student progress will be monitored via participation in seminars. Feedback on the first exam in Semester 1 will aid students in preparing for subsequent assessments and will identify any problems at an early stage.
