Module summary

This module provides the fundamentals of mathematics required by a numerate scientific degree programme. It includes similar material to A-level mathematics, but in a very condensed and selective format, only covering the most relevant material.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:- develop an understanding of elementary mathematical theory;

- have experience in obtaining basic mathematical solutions, including unfamiliar problems;

- develop processing and interpretation of visual and written information;

- assimilate material from lectures and implement in mathematical problems;

- develop quantitative ability which will underpin future scientific endeavours;

- develop time management in performing tutorial sheets and assessed coursework.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Understanding of equations, their use and manipulation
2. Form mathematical problems from descriptive text
3. Solving numerical formulae
4. Basic understanding of algebra
5. Understand the basics of calculus

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The student’s progress is monitored by weekly tutorial sheets undertaken in tutorial classes led by the module lecturer and a post-graduate tutor. Feedback also comes from one piece of assessed coursework and formative exercises on Minerva.
