SOEE1302 Advanced Mathematics 1 or equivalent.
SOEE1302 | Advanced Mathematics 1 |
This module is not approved as a discovery module
The overall aim of the module is to provide students with mathematical concepts and techniques essential for a variety of scientific disciplines. The focus is on understanding how we can use mathematics to solve, analyse and predict different physical processes in the Earth and Environmental sciences discipline. The module is designed for students who have already studied (or have prior knowledge of) basic differentiation, integration, and ODEs.
On completion of this module, students will have acquired an understanding of a range of mathematical concepts which underpin key areas of geophysical and atmospheric science. They will demonstrate practical application of their maths knowledge towards solving problems in these subject areas. This module establishes a strong independence of learning.
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
SSLO1: determine partial derivatives
SSLO2: evaluate 2D extrema of functions
SSLO3: understand the underpinning concepts and applications of the grad operator (div, grad, curl)
SSLO4: understand the underpinning concepts and use of Fourier Series
SSLO5: solve partial differential equations with separation of variables
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
SKLO1: Academic: Ability to apply mathematical concepts and equations to pen-on-paper analyse real-world problems scientifically.
SKLO2: Technical: Mathematical terminology and techniques.
SKLO3: Sustainability: ability to work pen-on-paper and derive from first principles is a cornerstone of sustainable educational principle.
SKLO4: Work-ready: pen-on-paper working ensures students are confident & independent from vulnerable web-based systems.
Details of the syllabus will be provided on the Minerva organisation (or equivalent) for the module.
