SOEE1311 Advanced Mathematics for Environmental and Geophysical Scientists
This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module provides students with an understanding of basic mathematical concepts and analysis techniques that they will require for a number of 2nd and 3rd year modules on the Environmental Science and Geophysics degree programmes.
On completion of this module, students will have acquired an understanding of a range of mathematical concepts which underpin key areas of environmental science. They will be able to apply their maths knowledge to solve problems of an environmental nature.
The mathematical problem sheets requiring the students to apply the techniques explained in the lectures, and the module establishes a strong independence of learning.
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. determine the partial derivatives and extrema of a function
2. apply the grad operator (div, grad, curl)
3. Solve partial differential equations
4. Introduction to Fourier Series
5. introduction to multi-dimensional integration.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Work-ready: Self-managed study skills (working independently, time management, organisational skills)
2. Academic: Ability to apply mathematical concepts and equations to pen-on-paper analyse real-world problems scientifically
3. Technical: Mathematical terminology and techniques
4. Sustainability: ability to work pen-on-paper and derive from first principles is a corner-stone of sustainable educational principle.
5. Work-ready: pen-on-paper working ensures students are confident & independent from vulnerable web-based systems.
