Module summary

This module introduces students to the theoretical perspectives on ideology, ethnicity, identity and popular culture. It provides a framework within which students can develop and understand ethnicity through popular forms of representation i.e. film, literature, music and the media. Subjects covered will include: - Theoretical perspectives on ethnicity, identity and diaspora - Identity and cultural hybridity - Ethnic minorities across generations in Britain - Minority perspectives and art - Cinematic representations of race and ethnicity - Black feminism and representations of gender in diasporic culture.

Objectives

This module introduces students to the theoretical perspectives on ideology, ethnicity, identity and popular culture. It provides a framework within which students can develop and understand ethnicity through popular forms of representation i.e. film, literature, music and the media.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module students should be able to:

- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the recurring themes within the creativity of ethnic minorities.
- Have an awareness of the dynamics involving migration and the settlement of ethnic minorities.
- Be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of theoretical perspectives on ethnic identities, diasporic cultures and cultural hybridity.
- Have an awareness of the issues affecting ethnic minorities
- Be able to critically analyse representations in diasporic cultures.
