During this part of their degree programme, students will have the opportunity to:
- make substantial linguistic progress, over a wide range of registers, in respect of the target language;
- face the linguistic, intellectual and psychological challenges of living in another country;
- acquire a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the target culture;
- develop the social/personal/transferable skills necessary for gaining maximum benefit from living in a different community;
- seek to enhance their future employability by familiarizing themselves, when appropriate, with the world of work within the target culture, or by reflecting on the utility of skills that they are acquiring while living abroad for their future employment.
On completion of the year students should have provided evidence of:
- being able to speak and understand everyday conversation with native speakers, read texts of an intermediate level and write grammatically accurate Russian;
- having acquired academic and practical knowledge of contemporary Russia;
- having learned how to live and study successfully in Russia.
Students will have had the opportunity to develop and practise:
- qualities and transferable skills related to Russian and Slavonic Studies, valuable for employment, e.g. ability to gather and process information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources;
- interpersonal skills required to operate in Russian society;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;
- the ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners.
A course of at least 18 hours per week tuition in Russian language and culture with termly examinations. Students are also required to work on a Residence Abroad Project on a freely chosen topic, for which academic support will be provided.

Students will be expected to immerse themselves in the culture of the host country and undertake those activities necessary for successful completion of the year abroad, including working on the Residence Abroad project throughout their stay in Russia.
Students will maintain contact with their personal tutors and/or the Year Abroad Co-ordinator by e-mail. Students will also complete a written plan of their Residence Abroad Project to be submitted in January. Regular contact is maintained between the Department and the on-site Year Abroad Co-ordinator, who sends termly reports on student attendance, progress and examination results.

If parts of the Year Abroad requirements are not completed, students may be required (at the discretion of the Module Leader) to undertake a re-sit examination see Russian Year Abroad Student Handbook). If students do not fulfill the residency requirement, or there is evidence of no serious attempt to fulfill the requirements of the study placement, students may be required to re-sit the year abroad at their own expense.
