This module focuses on applying Russian language to professional contexts, including translation and workplace communication. There are weekly practical language classes for translation and professional communication. You will learn how to make good use of available technologies (for example, machine translation, computer-assisted translation tools, generative AI, subtitling software). You will also learn the basics of register analysis, with a view to developing a more sophisticated understanding of the various genre conventions at play in professional communication. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
The aim of the module is to help the students
- develop a basic understanding of translation as a target-oriented activity;
- gain practice translating texts belonging to a variety of types;
- gain basic familiarity with technologies relevant to professional language use;
- gain some familiarity with and develop the basic linguistic apparatus for workplace communication;
- understand the basic concepts of register and genre;
- practice using digital technologies for drafting well-structured and information-rich texts.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Translate authentic texts belonging to different text types, and appraise their situation-bound communicative function;
2. Draft professional documents in accurate Russian with the help of digital technologies, using the appropriate genre, register and level of informativity;
3. Identify a variety of register markers and devices of cohesion in texts written in Russian;
4. Communicate in Russian at an appropriate level in a professional context.

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

6. Work with digital materials of various formats;

Students receive feedback on practice translations and other documents produced as part of homework. The business project brief is submitted formatively ahead of the presentation to enable students to receive feedback in support of that aspect of the assessment.
