This module is the core language component of Level 2 of degree programmes in Russian and is for students who have successfully completed residence abroad in a Russian-speaking country. It is taught through weekly practical language classes in which students will develop their grammar, oral proficiency, writing skills and cultural competencies relating to the Russophone space. Students will practise discussion and presentation skills to encourage active verbal communication as well as guided writing skills for successful written communication in various formats and styles.
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- communicate effectively in Russian with native or other competent speakers;
- demonstrate that they have consolidated and extended knowledge and understanding of essential linguistic structures of Russian;
- demonstrate intermediate receptive and productive language skills in a variety of contexts;
identify a variety of registers of Russian and show awareness of these in reading, listening, writing and speaking.
- be able to compose logical and syntactically correct short form responses for a variety of situations (reviews, analytical descriptions and opinion pieces)
- develop their cultural competency in relation to the Russophone space
- Develop strategies for independent language learning
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1- Correctly apply grammatical rules and structures at intermediate level;
2- Identify and use, at intermediate level, different registers in written and spoken Russian;
3- Understand and evaluate in the target language issues of culture and society in Russian-speaking areas.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4- Communicate confidently and engagingly in both pre-prepared and spontaneous oral Russian.
5- Process, synthesise and adapt text-based information.
6- Formulate arguments for discussions and take an active part in them.
7- Research, compose and write coherent written work.

Students will undertake regular language exercises in Russian. These language exercises will allow for students to receive regular feedback on the development and application of their language acquisition, which will allow for an accumulative approach to their language acquisition and its application.
