Module summary

This module is intended for students with Russian A Level or equivalent. The module is designed to train you in all aspects of practical language skills, and aims to prepare you for your period of study in a Russian-speaking country by taking a communicative approach. You will develop your written and spoken Russian, as well as your general linguistic skills, through working with texts, creative writing, consolidating and learning new grammar points, and regularly speaking with native speakers on a range of structured topics.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to consolidate and extend your existing productive, receptive and interactive skills in the Russian language, in order to provide a firm linguistic preparation for your period of residence abroad. The objective will be for you to have reached a minimum proficiency at least equivalent to CEFR level A2 and be working towards CEFR level B1. The aim and objective will be achieved through the provision of a weekly grammar class targetted at linguistic accuracy, together with two further weekly practical classes aimed at developing both written and oral communicative skills.

On successful completion of the module you will demonstrate your ability to:
1. understand and correctly use the foundations of Russian grammar
2. interact orally with reasonable ease in structured or predictable situations on selected topics, demonstrating a good level of grammatical, phonological and lexical accuracy, with some appreciation for the constraints of situation-bound usage
3. read and respond to texts (which may be abridged) on a variety of non-specialist subjects
4. produce structured pieces of creative writing on selected topics, demonstrating grammatical accuracy and a broad vocabulary.

Skills Learning Outcomes

5. express your thoughts clearly, coherently and with focus in both written and oral Russian
6. use the Cyrillic alphabet with confidence in digital contexts
