Module summary

This module provides students with the opportunity to gain understanding and real-world experience of teaching physics at secondary school level. This module has an independent application and enrolment system – you cannot enrol online. Objectives

This module gives students the chance to understand and experience what it is like to teach physics. By undertaking a placement or teaching activities they can develop skills utilised in the teaching profession. And while not exclusively for students considering a career in teaching, it can help them decide, and advantage them in this career route.

Learning outcomes

Students will be able to demonstrate application, synthesis and evaluation of physics teaching material suitable for secondary school pupils through:
1. Providing a coherent view of activities undertaken, written in formal English with illustrations, figures and references to literature sources as necessary.
2. Writing a concise account of current issues within physics teaching
3. Delivering a presentation of activities undertaken and answering related questions.

Syllabus

We envisage that students taking this module:

- will be placed within a local secondary school/6th form college with a specific remit to help organise Physics activities

- will organise Physics-based project(s) with the aim of promoting the excitement of Physics.

The specifics for each student will be decided in consultation between the student, host school teacher and the academic staff liaison.

Private study

Private Study Time is 185 hours.

Students typically undertake a placement in a school, for about 25 - 30 hours across the year. But the specific details vary between students and between schools, in agreement with the module leader.
