Module summary

This module explores recent trends in performance that use spatial, temporal, aural, visual and material means to intervene in particular places and sites. The module looks at site-responsive and site-specific performance, street performance, environmental performance, immersive and interactive performance. On this module you will investigate the key characteristics of this work; its aesthetic, social and political dimensions and develop your own creative ideas for original performance events.

Objectives

The module aims to develop student’s understanding and appreciation of
• The recent development of site-based art and performance practices
• Contemporary examples of global performance design practices
• The aesthetic, social and political dimensions of contemporary performance design
• Developing their own creative ideas for performance design events based on sites in Leeds.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. identify key characteristics and potentials of site-related performance design
2. articulate that understanding by researching and evaluating examples of contemporary performance design practice;
3. use that understanding to propose creative ideas of their own.

Syllabus

Lectures will typically cover topics such as:
• Site-specific art and performance (tracing developments from 20th art and avant-garde theatre)
• Interactive and immersive design and new forms of spectatorship, participation and co-authorship
• Blurred boundaries between art, architecture, space and performance
Seminars will consider examples of contemporary practice and discuss them in relation to the topics, debates and issues that have been raised in the lectures.
Workshops support students in developing their own creative ideas towards proposals for original, speculative schemes for performance design in Leeds.
