Module summary

On this module, you will work within collaborative groups to create a public performance for a paying audience, with supervisor support. Groups will respond to an industry informed creative brief, and you will identify your own critically informed creative inquiry to pursue through and alongside your collaborative practice. These projects are student-led and managed, and groups will operate as professional companies in partnership with stage@leeds and within the parameters of timetable and budget. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.

Objectives

On this module, you will develop an original piece of performance in the mode of a professional theatre company, drawing on academic discussion and examples of theatre and performance practice to support and sustain critical engagement and reflection. You will collaborate as a member of a creative team in at least one pre-defined production or performance role (e.g. direction, design, dramaturgy, outreach, etc.), contributing creatively and intellectually to the devising and production process, under tutor supervision. Creative work will build on the knowledges and approaches introduced in the first two years of your degree, and you will position your own creative and critical contribution in relation to academic discussion and contemporary professional practice. You will also engage successfully with industry relevant procedures such as health and safety, risk assessment, and sustainability review.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1- Engage critically with relevant literatures and practices to inform the realisation of collaborative, devised work;
2- Negotiate and carry out an individual creative role within a collaborative ensemble as appropriate to the performance context, showing nuanced understanding of professional practice;
3- Develop and present performance material with a clear dramaturgical intention and rationale, demonstrating creative and intellectual rigour;
4- Reflect critically and authoritatively on their own creative inquiry and its contribution to the ensemble’s creative aims.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

5- Demonstrate creative thinking and problem solving appropriate to the formal, methodological, ethical and aesthetic characteristics of a specific field of contemporary theatre and performance practice;
6- Respond proactively and productively to feedback from peers, tutors and collaborators to support the development of performance material;
7- Contribute towards and coordinate an extended collaborative process through effective time management, planning and organisation.

Students will also receive written formative feedback in response to draft performance proposals in the first half of the module.

In addition, formative feedback is provided throughout the devising and production process. Students will receive ongoing formative feedback from the supervising tutor. This will be in-person, in response to developments in the creative process and in-session, through group discussion, reflection and feedback. Students will receive feedback from their tutor and stage@leeds technicians during production meetings which will be held at regular intervals throughout the module.
