The module will explore different responses to text in relation to dramaturgy, space, design and collaborative working. It will offer the opportunity to explore a range of directorial approaches and the work of key theatre directors. Also, the module will enable students to experiment with rehearsal techniques in a studio environment and to learn new ways of analysing the work of other directors, manage their own time and negotiate ways of presenting their vision
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Demonstrate awareness and understanding of a range of theatre directors and their working methods.
• Utilise a range of techniques in directing different genres.
• Develop a critical enquiry to the relationship of the director/auteur and his/her relation to the text.
• Analyse contemporary theatrical performances by key directors.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Understand and apply the working methods of key contemporary 21st century directors (for example Eugenio Barba, Katie Mitchell, Mike Alfreds)
2. An ability to critically appreciate the role of the director
3. The ability to analyse a variety of approaches and methods employed
