Module summary

On this module you’ll plan, prepare and deliver a live instrumental or vocal performance of repertoire you have selected and programmed with support from module tutors and a specialist instrumental or vocal teacher. You’ll receive one-to-one instrumental or vocal lessons and attend and participate in group practical classes to develop your interpretative, technical and presentational skills. You’ll also engage critically with performance-related topics, and you’ll reflect on and evaluate performances, both your own and those of others.

Objectives

This module aims to develop your capabilities as a performing musician at an advanced level. Through engaging with your one-to-one lessons, practical classes, and regular private practice, you will be supported to plan, prepare and deliver a live performance that is appropriate to your instrumental specialism and stylistic focus. Practical classes offer you a range of performance opportunities to experiment with and evaluate your musical ideas in a supportive environment, from informal ‘work-in-progress’ sessions to more formal rehearsal opportunities. Classes will also support your critical engagement with a broader range of performance-related topics relating to staff specialisms (these might include elements of stagecraft, audience engagement, or musical leadership, for example).

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

1. Apply advanced technical and interpretative skills to plan, prepare, and deliver a live performance.
2. Evaluate and apply knowledge and skills gained across your studies appropriate to your instrumental specialism and stylistic focus in practical and reflective contexts.
3. Communicate musical ideas in precise, creative and instrumentally/stylistically appropriate ways.
4. Respond proactively and productively to feedback on and critical review of your and others' performances.
5. Reflect critically on your own learning, achievement, and development as a musician.

Students are encouraged to reflect on their own performances as well as the performances of others, and to implement this feedback through their practice and performance. Lectures are designed to support the summative portfolio assessment and will include the opportunity to receive formative feedback (from both the tutor and peers) on one of the portfolio items.
