Module summary

Through this module you will participate in collaborative ensemble performance projects which may involve participating in a concert with preceding rehearsal periods with, for example, an orchestra, choir, small band or new music ensemble, though the precise ensembles run will vary from year to year. You’ll participate in a performance ensemble, normally though not necessarily on your first instrument/voice, cultivating skills necessary for successful group working such as preparation, professionalism, flexibility and communication. Through group performance, you’ll also engage questions of personal and group responsibility and opportunity. You will typically be involved in two rehearsals per week leading to a concert which may take place in the evening or at a weekend. There may also be evening rehearsals and weekend rehearsals. Module assessment is 80% on your practical contribution including the final performance, and 20% on a reflective report considering these skills and attributes. NB. The hours of contact are indicative and some ensembles may have a little more contact time than others due to the nature of the project.

Objectives

The module gives students experience in collaborative music-making through participation in small or large ensembles. You will begin to develop stylistic awareness and ensemble-playing skills. Imagination will be stimulated by interactive learning in collaboration with both fellow students and staff (project tutors). Your self- and peer- assessment skills will be fostered, and they should demonstrate reliability and emerging professionalism in your conduct as a performing musician. You will continue to develop skills in meaningful and critical reflection on ensemble performance experiences and present this in an articulate manner.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Appraise music and collaborative performance with respect to appropriate contexts and perspectives
2. Apply a range of appropriate collaborative methodologies to the study of musical repertoires
3. Work collaboratively to find solutions to technical and interpretative challenges in rehearsal and performance

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Reflect analytically on your own learning, achievement, and personal/professional development
2. Communicate effectively with others
3. Work collaboratively to deliver a project to deadline

Syllabus

This varies from student to student and is dependent on the projects available. Activities have typically included orchestral projects, choral projects, popular music ensembles and a new music ensemble. These have been directed and mentored by staff and occasionally some sessions have been student-led. Projects are designed to reflect the competencies and orientations of the current cohort of students and will often respond to the School’s academic teaching and research.
