We expect students to have attained Grade 7 distinction in ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall Rockschool or equivalent, or to be of equivalent standard. Students will not be able to enrol on this module directly; please return the forms that you have been sent in August in order to select this module.
This module is not approved as a discovery module
On this module you’ll have one-to-one lessons on your first instrument/voice with a specialist teacher, attend and participate in performance classes, and learn about what performance means within an academic context. Through the module you’ll develop your performing abilities alongside your awareness of how performance might be approached in terms of matters such as repertoire selection, preparation and programming.
The module aims to support the progressive development of instrumental or vocal technique and interpretation and the development of performance and related skills (musicality and aural awareness, etc.) and knowledge of issues that contextualise performance as a practical and academic musical discipline. This objective is met through individual lessons, private practice, in-person performance, observation and discussion.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Develop and execute appropriate interpretative decisions in performance of chosen repertoire
2. Show an awareness of stagecraft and professional responsibility
3. Prepare and deliver an instrumental or vocal performance
4. Demonstrate a consistent level of technical and artistic proficiency on your chosen musical instrument or voice

5. Communicate effectively through the mode of live performance
Students will take individual lessons with a specialist instrumental or vocal teacher and will be responsible for the scheduling of these lessons across the academic session. These lessons are complemented by performance classes (which may include masterclasses and invited speakers) in which students receive appropriate preparatory support, perform for one another and gain feedback from staff and peers, and develop relevant reflective, evaluative and performance-related skills.

At the end of semester 1, students give a c. 10 minute formative performance exam, which generates written feedback from the examiner. Students are also required to submit a self-assessment of their formative exam in order to develop their critical and reflective skills (the self-assessment is not marked, but is used to inform discussions on critical judgment relating to performance in the second semester). Students receive feedback from IVTs in individual lessons, and from staff and peers in practical classes.

The Practical exam will take the form of an 8-10 minute recital in each semester.
