Module summary

This module brings music theory into the twenty-first century. You’ll study the foundations of musical styles from different parts of the world situated within their cultural contexts. The module does not assume familiarity with Western notation and harmony. You’ll learn various ways of representing music visually and will expand your aural skills to include parameters such as timbre. You’ll put theory into practice in workshops that will enhance your improvisation, composition and performance skills.

Objectives

This module aims to introduce you to a range of approaches to understanding the building blocks of music from different parts of the world. In lectures, you’ll learn the musical features of a range of styles (which might include jazz, popular music, electronic music, West-African music, Indian classical music and Western art music) in their cultural contexts. In workshops, you’ll build on what you’ve learnt in lectures through creative activities such as improvisation, composition and performance. This module will equip you with ways of communicating knowledge about the materials of music.

2. Recognise connections between musical theories and creative practice.
3. Recognise fundamental methodologies for the study of the materials of music, which are applicable to a range of musical traditions.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

In the eight practicals, you will have the opportunity to offer short verbal reflections on connections between musical theories and creative practice as well as on your learning, achievement, and experience of engaging with a range of musical traditions. You will receive verbal feedback on these reflections from staff in the practicals.

Online multiple-choice questions will measure your knowledge of analytical contexts and application of analytical methods and modes of communication. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions at eight drop-ins with a teaching assistant.
