Module summary

This module introduces the fundamental mechanisms of human immunology and its relationship to health and disease. Learners will discover how we protect ourselves from infection through our immune defences, and learn about the role of different types of leukocytes, antibodies and complement in our immune defences. Learners will develop an understanding of how the immune system educates itself to recognise different pathogens, and subsequently diversifies and improves its response, whilst maintaining immune homeostasis.

Objectives

During this course learners will develop a keen understanding of the immune system at both the conceptual and mechanistic level. Learning activities will take place as in-person large-group lectures, with active learning opportunities embedded throughout for students to test and apply their understanding of concepts against questions and scenarios provided by staff. This will be supported with online resources created by the module team and external partners.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Describe the major components of the human innate and adaptive immune system.
2. Explain how the adaptive immune system creates diversity, and maintains tolerance.
3. Describe an immune response to an infectious agent, and how the immune system adapts and creates memory (Academic - critical thinking, Sustainability – Systems Thinking)

Syllabus

Introduction to Immunology provides learners with an introduction to the cells of the immune system and the theory of immunity. Topics covered include:
• Innate Immunity
• Adaptive Immunity
• Immune cell interactions
• Vaccination and antibody diversity
• Immunological diseases

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

This module will employ several approaches to ensure learners have continual formative feedback:

• In-class feedback through engaging with active-learning components of in-person teaching.
• Completion of revision question banks (with questions in a similar format to those found in summative assessments), and reviewing feedback comments (automated).
• A timetabled revision session with a timed element, and formative feedback against learning outcomes.
