ENQ5 is the final part of the Enquire strand and the conclusion of Enquire dissertation that was started in year 4 (ENQ4). ENQ5 supports students to drive, shape, and compile a dissertation project. ENQ5 is a vital component of students wider clinical and academic training. Students are supported by a research active academic or clinical supervisor. In year 5, supervisors provide guidance as students conclude their projects through academic reasoning and dissemination of findings via oral presentation and written thesis.
On completion of this module, students should be able to ...
ENQ4/5 aims to provide medical students with the scope to apply scientific methods and approaches when developing and carrying out a research, audit or evaluation project of relevance to clinical decisions, healthcare delivery or patient experience.
ENQ5 enables students to demonstrate their acquisition and application of learning from across the ENQUIRE curriculum (years 1-5). Specifically, ENQ5 assesses student ability to:
• Develop skills to integrate evidence alongside other sources of information, from patients and
clinical practice, when making effective clinical decisions of relevance to patients
• Disseminate project findings through oral and written presentation.
Subject Specific Learning Outcomes:
On completion of ENQ5, the student will be able to:
LO1: Apply appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis to effectively manage data, interpret findings, and draw meaningful conclusions relevant to the study question.
LO2: Critically appraise the strengths and weaknesses of the chosen study design and methods in addressing the study question, considering alternative approaches and potential biases.
LO3: Disseminate research findings through a well-structured manuscript and clear, oral presentation. Demonstrate the ability to communicate complex information succinctly, respond knowledgeably to questions.
LO4: Demonstrate understanding of how research findings can be used to inform future medical or clinical research, innovate medical practice, and promote clinical change.
Skills Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills:
LO5: Critical thinking (AS2) Demonstrate critical reasoning through the identification of clinical problems or gaps in current knowledge, the critical analysis and synthesis of information, and the interpretation of study implications within the context of medical research and/or clinical service evaluation.
LO6: Academic writing (AS3) Students will demonstrate skills to write a clear and concise academic paper using appropriate language, style and referencing.
LO7: Presentation skills (AS1) Compose and deliver a clear and informative presentation that summarises salient
ENQ5 is a student led module and concludes the Enquire Dissertation.
There are introductory lectures at the end of year 3 and beginning of year 4.
Thereafter the module is supported by project supervisors through meetings and communications initiated by the students in collaboration with their supervisor.

Regular, feedback is provided through supervisor meetings. Students are expected to meet with supervisors throughout ENQ4 and 5.
Students receive formative feedback throughout ENQ4 and 5. Progress is formally monitored by the year 4 assessments. This includes a supervisor report toward the end of year 4 to guide student preparedness for ENQ5. .

Use this field for any additional information about coursework assessment not included in the table above, and also for details of any alternate resit formats available. The ENQUIRE Dissertation project runs over two academic years, the project starts in year 4 and ends in semester 1 of year 5 when the final grade is awarded. The two written assessments from ENQ4, will inform the final research report as they provide the study plan, and literature review needed to identify the research question in this medical area. However, they need to be reworked to take into consideration the learning experience of carrying out the study, supervisor and PPIE feedback, the findings and their interpretation, and the rethinking needed to critique their methods and identify implications for evidence-based practice in the future. Coursework is assessed as follows: Students are required to pass each component in order to pass the module. Scores for oral and written presentations are combined in a 30-70% weighting respectively and define the overall ENQ5 grade.
