For progression to the Year 5 MBChB, each student is required to pass all Year 4 modules.
The OSCE consists of 24 stations.
Sequence 1
Day 1 - Stations 1-7
Day 2 – Station 8-14
90 seconds reading time outside each station and 8 minutes inside the station.
Students who perform well enough on stations 1-14 will not be required to sit stations 15-24. Students who perform so poorly on stations 1-14 that they will be unable to achieve the overall pass mark will not be required to sit stations 15-24.
Sequence 2
Stations 15-24
90 seconds reading time outside each station and 8 minutes inside the station.
The content of the OSCE stations will be divided between the five ICUs in year 4. Stations will contain components from more than one ICU and from theme days. Simulated patients and/or real patients may be used. Communication skills and other generic skills may be assessed at any station. The assessment of student performance will be carried out by trained examiners and, where appropriate, by the simulated or real patients themselves. There may be more than one assessor (e.g. trainee examiners, external examiners, senior academic assessors) present at each station.
The result for this assessment is also the basis on which eligibility for MBChB with Honours is determined.
