Module summary

This module introduces Exploratory Data Analysis, sample size and power and non-paramteric testing. Students will: - gain experience in simple statistical analysis of open-ended problems and be introduced to key skills - improve familiarity with the statistics package R.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be better able to:
a) choose, compare and contrast simple methods for exploring data on a single variable, or the relationship between two variables;
b) calculate statistical power and required sample size for situations that can be analysed using one or two sample t-tests;
c) implement one sample Wilcoxon signed rank tests, sign tests and two sample Wilcoxon rank sum tests on data where the assumptions of one or two sample t-tests are not satisfied;
d) write coherently structured and referenced statistical reports using information from more than one source;
e) effectively manage time when working to a deadline;
f) plan, design and carry out simple statistical analyses on an open-ended problem;
g) use the statistics package R to carry out standard tests and calculations;
h) work together to present results in oral and written form as part of a group.

Syllabus

1. Techniques for data analysis using R. The material covered will include simple EDA, transformations, probability plots and normality testing, one and two sample t-tests, non-parametric tests, power and sample size calculations.
2. Solving problems using statistical modelling techniques. A series of problems will be used to drive the models and techniques.
3. Case studies, group projects and presentations.
