The module provides an understanding of the challenges and issues faced by international banks, with a focus on internationalisation, regulation, stability and financial innovation. The course assumes an international perspective with numerous cross-country comparisons.
On completion of this module, students should be able to critically assess:
- the international banking and financial environment
- the nature of, and reasons for, the rapidly changing international banking and financial environment
- the problems faced by international regulation
- the nature of and reasons for systemic distress and failure in the banking industry
This course delves into the concepts of financial intermediation and information asymmetry, exploring contemporary issues in banking, the function and structure of central banks, and the regulatory framework governing the banking sector. It also investigates the impact of macroeconomic factors on banking operations, examining the reasons behind the failures of banks and other financial institutions, as well as the repercussions of such failures. Additionally, the course includes a segment on FinTech, highlighting its rising significance in the banking industry.
