The aim of this module is to develop students' higher level technical, professional and ethical skills appropriate for a career in banking and finance in times of technological and sustainability challenges. The module is focused on a critical evaluation of the financial and ethical dimensions of various aspects of sustainability, e.g., environmental and societal sustainability. The module begins with a review of the academic literature on sustainability, which will provide the knowledge base that students will need in the second part of the module, where they will be required to prepare an individual sustainability report and present the key findings of their reports in groups. Students will need to demonstrate professional and ethical judgement combined with communication skills.
The aim of this module is to develop students' higher level technical, professional, ethical and communication skills appropriate for a career in banking and finance in times of technological and sustainability challenges.
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of how decisions in banking and finance affect environmental and social sustainability;
2. Evaluate the available options for reducing environmental and social externalities; and
3. Discuss key ethical concepts related to sustainability and evaluate their application in banking and finance.
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Identify issues that raise professional responsibilities and consequences of unethical behaviour and formulate appropriate professional recommendations with regard to various dimensions of sustainability;
- Demonstrate technical, analytical, evaluative and integrative skills appropriate to a professional in the banking and finance discipline;
- Develop their writing and presentation skills.
Indicative content:
Sustainability issues as a form of externality; the ethical dimensions of unsustainable business behavior; the role of banking in achieving sustainability; sustainability metrics and greenwashing; regulation of sustainability.
