Module summary

Operations and supply chain management is vital to an organisation’s competitiveness. The current revolution in digital technologies provides new opportunities and threats for organisations, requiring new managerial capabilities. This module provides an overview of the key concepts and principles in managing operations, supply chains, and digital technologies. Students will explore key issues in operations and supply chain management and understand how digital technologies could be used and their applications and impact on organisations.

Objectives

The module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills for managing operations, supply chains, and digital technologies within the workplace. Students will be exposed to the fundamental principles, theories and practical activities associated with managing operations, supply chains, and digital technologies. They will gain an understanding of how to apply these principles and theories to improve organisational performance and solve challenges faced by organisations. Students will develop their understanding by a combination of lectures, case studies, and hands-on workshops.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and significance of operations, supply chain and information management in varied organisations.
2. Demonstrate knowledge on how to apply main concepts, principles and approaches in managing operations, supply chains, and digital technologies.
3. Evaluate the strengths and drawbacks of different operations, supply chains, digital technologies-related strategies and practices.
4. Develop strategies to manage operations, supply chains and digital technologies and its associated challenges.
5. Evaluate contemporary practices in Operations, Supply chain Management and digital technologies.

Syllabus

Indicative content:
Operations performance & strategy, capacity & inventory management, process design, planning & control, lean operations, importance of information management, big data and analytics, mobile technologies for hybrid working, sharing economy platforms etc.

Private study

Private study- a variety of activities such as reading list, leisure reading, case studies etc. will be provided which will help students to prepare for assessments and further their knowledge on the topics.
