Module summary

The module introduces students to the theory and practice of management and to consider the contemporary applications of management ideas. - The module begins with consideration of the nature of management and the evaluation of management thought. - Subsequently the key functions of management are discussed: planning, organising, directing, and controlling. - The final section of the module assesses the challenges for management in the domestic and international environment.

Objectives

To introduce students to the theory and practice of management and to consider the contemporary applications of management ideas.

Learning outcomes

In this elective you explore the difficulties faced by actual managers. Your selection of managers is contacted and their experiences and perspectives found.

Working in teams, you identify their activities, problems & solutions. Your activities are supported by lectures to equip you with the jargon and issues likely to be uncovered, along with some of the research findings which can assist practicing managers.

The programme of workshops takes you through this step-by-step over the 10 weeks.
