Module summary

This module provides students with an introduction to entrepreneurship. The module begins by considering what enterprise and entrepreneurship are; hence, provides you with creative techniques to deal with innovation within enterprises. The module then extends the exploration of different types of entrepreneurs and how external context can facilitate or demotivate the flourish of an entrepreneurial business. The creation part covers discussions on incubators and start-up programmes for entrepreneurship growth. Finally, the module provides an exploration of different sectors of enterprises such as the Creative Industries and Family Businesses. The module is suitable for students from any discipline who are interested in learning more about entrepreneurship. It provides a useful introduction to both those who wish to become entrepreneurs as well as those interested in this topic more generally.

Objectives

This module provides students with an introduction to key ideas, concepts and practices in the field of Entrepreneurship. It is suitable for all students who wish to learn more about Entrepreneurship to either facilitate their ideas around starting their own businesses or to understanding more about enterprise, innovation and entrepreneurship more generally.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. Understand selected foundational ideas within enterprise and entrepreneurship and how they are transformed into innovation.
2. Explore the characteristics of different types of entrepreneurs and how different contexts can influence enterprises and entrepreneurship.

- What is enterprise and entrepreneurship?
- Entrepreneurs: characteristics and the myth of the hero entrepreneurs
- Innovation and creativity in enterprises and entrepreneurship
- Exploring different types of entrepreneurs
- Exploring the influences of contexts surrounding enterprises
- Facilitating enterprise creation (incubators, start-up programmes) and growth
- Exploring sectors and groups of enterprises (e.g. Creative Industries, Family Businesses)
