Objectives

This module aims to provide students with foundation level knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of Human Resource Management (HRM) and an insight into some of the key issues in HRM, including recent innovations in thinking and practice, social diversity and the management of Human Resources in an international environment.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module students will be able to recognise and describe:
- the role of HRM within different types of business organisation and the theories and assumptions on which HRM is founded
- the relationship between HRM practice and regulation of employment
- the value of diversity and how organisations manage diversity.
- recent important developments within HR practice, such as performance management and high performance work systems
- at foundation level how HRM differs from country to country depending on national characteristics

Syllabus

Indicative content
Coverage of the role of HRM within different types of business organisation, an introduction to theories of HRM, an overview of the relationship between HRM practice and regulation of employment, definitions of diversity and how organisations manage diversity, introduction to comparative HRM practice, and recent important developments within HR practice.
