This module will provide you with the opportunity to understand the city of Leeds - you are studying here, but now is your opportunity to find out more about the city within a theoretical, socio-historical and practical context. The module will allow you to identify your own 'problem' or 'opportunity' within the city for which you will then design a creative intervention - to help address the 'problem' or make the most of the 'opportunity'. The module does not have any prerequistes but if you have some experience of producing creative work and/or of working within community settings then that would be an advantage.
This module will provide students with the opportunity to develop a historical and theoretical understanding of cities and urban space, alongside a practical appreciation of key problems experienced by communities in the city of Leeds and key opportunities afforded by the city and its people. The module will provide students with the opportunity to explore the city and identify one key issue which they would like to address by developing a creative intervention. To enable them to develop this intervention they will also be introduced to other impactful creative interventions, creative practice techniques, and participatory community development approaches.
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Identify and critically engage with theories 'the city' and urban space
2. Research current challenges and opportunities facing the city of Leeds
3. Explore and critically reflect upon community development examples and models
4. Develop a creative intervention in response to a self-identified 'problem' facing the city of Leeds
5. Engage with processes particular to Arts and Community development project work - e.g. applying for funding
The content will cover such areas as:
- Multi-disciplinary theories of 'the city' and urban space
- Accessing and analysing data and information about the city of Leeds
- Community and arts development work in practice
- Development of creative practice

Students will be expected to undertake set readings to prepare for each session - and to utilise and further develop independent research and creative skills to identify and investigate a 'problem/opportunity' and to develop their creative work. There will be a requirement to engage with an online blog and discussion board to enable the development of ideas and critical reflection upon these ideas within a supportive environment.
Student will have the option to submit a draft/plan of assignments beforehand. There will also be peer-review and tutor-review opportunities as part of the teaching strategy.
