Professional practice in education often requires making difficult, complicated decisions about what the right thing is to do. This module will provide you with the skills and understanding needed to make well-justified decisions, based on local and national policies as well as up-to-date ethical theory.
The purpose of the module is to provide students with a critical appreciation of:
- social and political issues influencing the development of a personal and professional educational philosophy;
- the implications of these issues for professional practice at both the personal and institutional level.
1. Apply ethical principles and professional codes of practice to dilemmas in educational settings
2. Explain contemporary educational issues including equality and diversity, and their implications for professional practice
3. Evaluate ethical approaches to decision-making in educational settings
Being digital: As part of this module students will develop a range of digital literacy skills. Further details are provided in the module handbook
The content will cover such areas as:
Developing philosophical and ethical understandings of the learning context and the frameworks that guide professional procedures and practices; examining approaches to promoting equality and recognising diversity in the organisation and delivery of the curriculum

Students will be expected to actively participate in sessions to explore issues in relation to their current educational context and promote the development of their own learning and teaching philosophy. Students will also be required to undertake follow-up research in relation to the topics covered.
Formative feedback will be available through interactive resources on Minerva, verbal feedback by the tutor in taught sessions, peer- and self-assessment of written work, written tutor feedback on a plan and excerpts of the assessed essay. Access to the tutor for additional feedback is also available via email, and face-to-face tutorials by appointment.

Students will be assessed by reflective portfolio which is comprised of ten equal sections. These will be completed on a weekly basis meaning students are assessed on their learning across the module, with the opportunity to revise and update their work prior to submitting at the end of the semester.
