This module provides students with the opportunity to consolidate and apply their learning through the design and implementation of a small scale research project on a negotiated topic relating to work with children, young people and families.
On completion of the module you will be able to:
-Pursue in depth a topic, issue or research question from a range of perspectives that includes theoretical frameworks drawn from relevant disciplines and cultural and global dimensions;
-Apply and evaluate theoretical models in relation to practice in the field of childhood, adolescence, family, education/care and culture through independent research and enquiry;
-Report, synthesize and critically evaluate findings in reference to appropriate theoretical frameworks in a written dissertation;
-Demonstrate critical understanding of the limitations of professional practice and of the transferability of research findings to other settings and situations;
-Demonstrate understanding of the ethical issues associated with research into children, young people and families.
-Independent research
-Presentation of data
-Analysis of data.
The subject of the dissertation will relevant for professional practice in relation to children, young people and families and will be negotiated between the student and supervisor.
-Opportunity to draw on ongoing work experience and to apply and test learning in the work setting.

- 20 hours: on preparing initial proposal
- 11 hours: preparation for tutorials
- 350 hours: accessing research location, generating and analysing data, reading and writing up dissertation.
