This module is designed to prepare students for undertaking a primary research project with children and families in their final year dissertation. The module aims to build upon student’s knowledge of research methodologies and design. Students will find this module useful as preparation for their dissertation or project, especially if the focus involves children and families. A significant component of the module involves exploration of ethical considerations of undertaking research with children and families.
The module will introduce students to the research methods and skills required to undertake a small-scale research project in relation to children, young people and families.
1. Differentiate between quantitative and qualitative research methods.
2. Evaluate the suitability of different research methods in the study of children and families.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of ethics and the ethics of researching vulnerable groups.
4. Formulate a valid research question informed by existing research in the area.

The content will cover such areas as:
The module will introduce students to a wide range of qualitative and quantitative research methods. The module will explore the setting of research questions and will consider the ethical challenges of research in the work-base.
-Opportunity to draw on ongoing work experience and to apply and test learning in the work setting.
The practicalities of carrying out research will be considered as will the analysing and writing up of research data.
