This module is designed to promote an understanding of autism and an appreciation of the skills and range of approaches used to support learners appropriately.
- To identify the key characteristics of autism
- To be aware of the impact of autism on individual development
- To critically evaluate strategies for working with autistic learners.
On successful completion of the module students will be able tohave a knowledge of:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the key characteristics of autism
- Identify the implications of autism for learners and their educators
- Assess factors that can contribute to an autistim-friendly learning environment
- Distinguish a range of strategies appropriate for working with autistic learners in a specified context
- Develop training materials that meet the needs of those supporting autistic learners
- Justify the design of the training package in relation to an identified audience
- Knowledge of alternative communication skills
- Recognition of specific needs
- Evaluation of educational approaches
As part of this module, students will develop a range of digital literacy skills. Further details are provided in the module handbook
The content will cover such areas as:
- What is autism and what does it mean to be autistic?
- Changing understandings of autism over time
- Theories of causation
- Differences in perceptual and social functioning;
- Potential impact on learning including challenging behaviour
- Recognised approaches to learning and teaching; inclusion and autism in the learning environment.

A key aspect of the module is the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the needs of autistic learners through private study, and the use of electronic media sources.
There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module via student engagement in each taught session and via the tutorials for the assignments.
