Objectives

1. To introduce & critically analyse a range of research projects in education
2. To reflect upon research and its outcomes in relation to a work-based setting
3. To develop an understanding of the theories underpinning the development of learning resources
4. To identify strategies and methodologies for developing & piloting new learning resources
5. To identify the ethical issues which arise from conducting research in education

Learning outcomes

On completion of the module students will have a knowledge of:
-Types of research, e.g. action research; evidence-based practice, and the appropriate application of these
-The critical analytical skills required to assess research methods and outcomes
-The impact of research in work-based learning and teaching settings
-Research underpinning the development of new learning resources

As part of this module, students will develop a range of digital literacy skills. Further details are provided in the module handbook

Syllabus

- Introduction to a range of research projects, their aims, objectives, methodologies and outcomes
- Development of a critical ‘voice' in relation to research projects
- Reflection on the application of research to the individual learning and teaching setting
- Preparation of a learning contract outlining the development of a new learning resource

Private study

Key concepts will be introduced each week and students will be expected to explore these further through reading and reflecting on their personal experience in an education/training setting.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be monitored informally in terms of their understanding of the key concepts introduced throughout the module. Formative feedback will be provided on student assignments. Formal monitoring will be via tutorials built into the seminars to support preparation for summative assessment.
