This module will allow students to develop an understanding of the process of planning and undertaking a research project. It will introduce students to the main types of research and examine the various elements of the research process and the ethical considerations required when undertaking a piece of individual research.
The aim of this module is to give students an introduction to interdisciplinary research and to designing a directed small-scale project. It seeks to familiarize the students with the process of conducting research, relevant methodologies and ethical issues
At the end of this module students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
-a range of different disciplinary perspectives on research and how these interrelate
-the process of using different research methods and methodologies from different disciplines
-how to develop a focus and plan a small research project
-how to carry out and write a literature review for research
-ethical issues in research
- Research skills
- Ethics awareness
- Understanding of different ways of doing research
- Academic skills
- Writing skills
The module will cover main types of research, main quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, research ethics, finding a focus and formulation of research questions, conducting and writing a literature review and designing a research approach.

There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module via supervision meetings, student engagement in group seminars and via the VLE.
