Module summary

Do you work with learners with special education needs? Would you like to know more? This module introduces you to policy and practice (past and present) relating to those with SEND, and questions whether inclusive practice is appropriate or desirable for all learners. Strategies for developing good practice are identified and discussed.

Objectives

1. An appreciation of historical changes in perceptions of and attitudes towards physical and learning differences over time
2. Exploring and evaluating contrasting perspectives on the nature of inclusion
3. Understanding of the impact of legislation & policy on SEND provision
4. Knowledge of the range of SEND & strategies to enable access to the curriculum

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
1. Evaluate a variety of perspectives on SEND and inclusion
2. Analyse the range of the SEND continuum
3. Evaluate SEND educational provision
4. Reflect on and evaluate their own professional practice and identify ways in which it could become more inclusive

Skills Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Deliver effective and engaging oral and visual presentation appropriate to intended audience (Academic)
2. Use digital technology and techniques to create digital items (such as images, documents and mind maps) (Digital)
3. Evaluate different arguments and perspectives, using supporting evidence to form opinions, arguments, theories and ideas. (Academic)
4. Write in a clear, concise, focused and structured manner that is supported by relevant evidence. (Academic)

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module via student engagement in each taught session and via the tutorials for the assignments. Access to tutors is also available via email.

Methods of Assessment

Normally resits will be assessed by the same methodology as the first attempt, unless otherwise stated
