The module will introduce students to the essential statistical concepts required for success on their degree. Throughout this module you will be given lots of opportunities to develop your own problem-solving skills and learn how to apply the statistical theories introduced to simple real-life situations. This module will also look to introduce concepts and techniques that are crucial for future research.
During this module students will be introduced to core concepts and techniques in statistics. They will gain experience and confidence using these techniques and learn how this area of mathematics is applied in science. Examples and datasets will be used from real life scenarios so inference can be made.
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Explore and manipulate a variety of basic mathematical objects in the area of statistics
2. Perform calculations and solve problems in abstract mathematical and real-world scenarios
3. Present mathematical ideas from the area of statistics using precise mathematical language in various forms
4. Use mathematical data to substantiate or infer outcomes within a practical and scientific context.

- Correlation and regression,
- Statistical distributions such as Binomial and Normal,

Formative feedback will be given in seminars, via in-class quizzes, via completion of online quizzes and via submission of independent work such as written problem sets.
