Module summary

This module explores how image, music and text can be used to convey ideas, and how these ideas can be put into practice. The module will develop your analysis of creative work, and culminate in the production of an individual creative piece which engages with the intersections between these aspects of the module.

Objectives

This module will give you an overview of how to read and interpret image, music and text. It will consider the ways in which ideas are communicated in these areas and will look at primary and secondary sources. It will focus particularly on approaches and examples from within interdisciplinary creative practice to illustrate these areas. By the end of the module, you will produce a creative piece with a short accompanying critical commentary, and an analysis of a piece of work in the same field. The module will also particularly focus on the development of your skills in the communication of a creative outcome and aspects of critical reflection.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrate a critical and creative awareness of the use of image, music and text, and express this through a case study focused on at least one specific element (i.e. image, music, or text)
2. Analyse and evaluate a piece of work in a chosen creative field with reference to critical ideas found with your own research.
3. Develop a creative product which responds to module themes about the interpretation and creation of image, music, and text.
4. Critically interpret different source materials with an awareness of frameworks for analysing representation.

Skills Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Creativity: Generate new creative ideas and work underpinned by critical and theoretical ideas about image, music and text.
2. Critical Thinking: Critically examine and explain in academic writing your own creative work and that of others using relevant theories and module themes.
3. Reflection: Reflect on your own craft and creative decision making to appraise your own work through writing a critical explainer to accompany your creative piece.
