This module will introduce you to the global creative industries – a growing and exciting part of the world economy. You will learn about what they are, the opportunities they present, how they operate, and their positive impact on the world. Through exploring case studies, you will begin to understand some of the factors that affect the development and launch of new creative industries products. We will look at key ideas such as the creative industries trident, cultural hybridity and the entrepreneurial ecosystem, and you will have the opportunity to put your skills into practice as you develop your own product launch idea. Ultimately, this module aims to help you find your place in this exciting and expanding world of opportunities.
This module aims to introduce students to the unique and interrelated theories and skills that are needed for effective, sustainable work in the Creative Industries. In class you will be presented with opportunities to analyse high-profile examples of creative industries products and you will be given tools to deconstruct the meanings, values, and business models that make them successful. Using these analyses, you will work to develop a concept for your own creative industries product in a market of your choosing.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated achievement of the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrate familiarity with key theories, concepts and debates relevant to the creative industries.
2. Identify opportunities for innovation in the Global Creative Industries.
3. Identify the range of skills needed to work in the Global Creative Industries.
4. Develop a concept for a creative industries product into an appropriate market.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Academic skills including research, critical analysis, and academic writing.
6. Enterprise skills including developing vision and purpose; applying commercial, ethical, sustainable, digital and inter-disciplinary literacies; and information searching and analysis.
7. Work-ready skills including commercial awareness within the creative industries; time management, planning & organising; and problem solving & analytical skills.

Each 3-hour session will comprise approximately 20 minutes of content delivery followed by 35 minutes of formative exercises in which students will conduct their analysis and ideation for their product launch. These analysis and ideation sessions provide opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors.

A template will be provided for this assessment. It will require students to critically analyse a creative industries market, plan a launch according to the material covered in the module, and justify their plan choices with reference to the learning materials.
